What better way to imbibe the Christmas spirit than through a piece like this. Its message is simple yet profound — using the metaphors of climbing mountains and fording streams to point toward the pursuit of one’s dreams. There is, perhaps, also a quiet reference to an inner compass that guides that journey. The singing is a fine example of the contralto voice — deep, resonant, and full of emotional weight. One such moment is captured in this archival clip of the Dalai Lama’s arrival in India in 1959, following China’s occupation of Tibet. What must have seemed, at the time, a temporary departure has since turned into a life in exile spanning more than six decades.
