Lesson In Art Appreciation Of A Different Kind

In a composition like this, one would first look for how the body is framed within the picture. Then we see the use of light, shadow and the balance of elements. In this respect the picture we see is stark and spartan, direct with a nondescript background that makes us focus on the subject and nothing else. The light is direct with no shadow effects to enhance  or subdue any aspect.

Pictures like this are never static and the intention is always to emphasize angles, curves and movement. With the left hand raised and left leg taken forward, beautiful angles are created and this accentuates the curves on the opposite side. A semblance of movement is also created.

The pose contributes in a major way to the mood. With one hand raised up and the other partially behind her, it suggests giving up defenses and in effect showing a welcoming, seductive stance.  The partly opened lips also enhance the alluring look. Just an observation, that women with partly opened lips appear seductive, men appear like morons.

If the subject conveys emotion, it is a mix of vulnerability and confidence. While the pose conveys vulnerability, her direct eye contact suggest confidence. She seems to say, "You can have me, but can you satisfy me?".

One of the biggest attributes of female beauty is skin tone. The subject here perfect in this respect. Her raised arm does not show any sagging skin, and in general her skin tone is even and firm. There are no VPLs (Visible Panty Lines) indicating she must be professional model who is used to posing her body.

Throughout the history of art, the female nude was often idealized, symbolizing beauty, fertility, and divine perfection. We have seen Botticelli's Venus, and artists like Renoir and Manet portraying the sensuality aspect in their nudes. However we will not go on this track, but focus on our subject.

One thing you would notice there is no vulgarity element in the picture. I would extend that to most of Mayur's "works". If appreciated in light of the above, there is a lot to see beyond what obviously meets the eye. There is a different type of beauty to behold.

I am afraid by giving an objective, clinical review of the picture, I have stripped it off any fantasies you may have held. I am sure most of us have reached the stage where we have stopped objectifying women. Some like me have grown up daughters and when we see a woman, it is with a different lens, more sympathetic, sensitive and understanding.
