Taking the Plunge

A symbolic moment from the film where the daughter finally enters the water in search of her father

A symbolic moment from the film where the daughter finally enters the water in search of her father

Here is my attempt at a simple explanation of the ending of this beautiful video.

In the beginning, when the father leaves the little girl, there is the deep pain of separation. Through the different stages of her life, she never quite comes to terms with it. There remains a constant yearning within her to seek him again.

This yearning is almost spiritual in nature. Her devotion is one-pointed and does not give in to the distractions that life presents along the way.

As an old woman, she can no longer restrain this powerful longing to be united with her father. And so she takes the plunge, she enters the water.

It is a symbolic step that, at some stage in life, each of us must take in order to meet our father, our creator.

There she finds the boat her father had taken when he left her. The boat becomes the symbol of the invisible thread that had always linked her to him. She lies down in that empty boat. In finding the symbol that represented him, she finally finds peace and falls asleep.

When she awakens the next morning, she realises that her father had always been with her.

She begins to run with a new sense of certainty, knowing that he is there. In that moment she too is transformed — back into the young, innocent girl whose father had once left her. Their union is complete. They meet again in the same state of innocence that existed at the moment before he departed.

The message seems to be that our father, our creator, is a constant presence. We may pass through the many ups and downs of life, remembering him and seeking him in different ways. But to truly experience that union, desire alone is not enough.

At some point, we must take the plunge. We must enter the waters.

The father had already shown her the path when he sailed away in the boat, leaving it behind as a quiet symbol of his presence. In the end, it is not merely the longing to meet him that matters. It must be followed by action — the willingness to leave everything else behind and move toward him.

You may also notice a bird flying constantly above in the video. It may be seen as a symbol of the father — of God — watching over us at all times.

He is always there, in every stage and every situation of our lives.
