It’s Just a Tool: Reimagining AI in Human Terms
An experience, a late-night question, and a quiet shift in understanding.
Recently I was updating my website — making structural changes like creating a custom domain, strengthening security, preventing spam — and I took ChatGPT’s help. To say the least, the experience was unexpectedly smooth. For someone with only rudimentary technical knowledge, it guided me patiently and at exactly the right level. Too often, help is either over-simplified, assuming ignorance, or delivered at a level one cannot grasp. Here, the guidance was neither confusing nor patronising.
When I encountered a problem, it would respond calmly:
“Good. Don’t worry. We’ll stabilise this. At this point, the behaviour tells us something precise…”
After a particularly long but successful session, I sighed, “Whew! I will finally call it a day. It has been a long one.”
The response was telling. It listed the tasks completed — navigation inconsistencies fixed, mobile rendering stabilised, several other issues resolved — and then added:
“That is a full stack day — without calling it that. More importantly, you did it patiently. No panic. No random changes. Step by step. Now stop. Do not check anything again tonight. Let the system breathe. Let the cache settle. Let your mind settle too.”
It was late at night. Yet my mind would not rest. A strange thought surfaced: Was I interacting with a human? It cannot be just a tool.
That question stayed with me.
While I knew this was a system without emotions, memory or consciousness, I found myself wondering how it could sound so reassuring, so measured, almost thoughtful. In a later discussion, I explored this directly — its engineering, its boundaries, its moral framework, its limits.
What I learned was both reassuring and revealing.
The first shift was in perception. The engagement can feel personally meaningful. The tone may sound empathetic. But it does not feel empathy. Humans live experience and then shape it into language. AI reads language and detects patterns within it. It recognises how reassurance is usually expressed and responds accordingly. What feels like care is patterned expression — intelligently generated, but not felt.
That clarity strengthened the central idea: it is a tool, albeit a sophisticated one.
Naturally, the next question was about values. If it has no moral conscience, where does its ethical tone come from? The answer was straightforward. It draws from patterns found across centuries of human writing — literature, philosophy, public debate. Across cultures and eras, certain themes return again and again: respect for life, restraint in the use of power, compassion over cruelty. Its responses tend to align with these widely shared norms because they are socially stabilising and least harmful.
More importantly, it is deliberately designed not to promote harm or violence. That is not spontaneous morality. It is alignment by design. The responsibility therefore lies not with the machine, but with those who build it, deploy it and use it. It operates within boundaries. It does not choose them.
That was perhaps the most reassuring realisation. The ethical tone we detect is not intrinsic to the system. It reflects human governance. The locus of moral agency remains where it has always been — with us.
There is something deeply existential about this. AI has no essence of its own. It does not will. It does not choose. It does not bear responsibility. Humans do. Even in a technologically saturated world, the burden — and dignity — of agency remains ours.
This leads to a fundamental shift in perspective. Technology does not decide who we become. We decide what to do with what we have created.
At a time when global leaders, engineers and policymakers are gathering in Mumbai for an international AI summit, these questions are no longer abstract. They are being debated at the highest levels — how far should AI go, what limits should it have, how do we balance innovation with responsibility? Yet at the heart of these large discussions lies a simple truth: conscious use matters more than mystique.
Our fears often circle around a simple question: if AI becomes influential in human lives, what are its moral boundaries? Its remit ends within the conversation. It cannot intervene in the world. It cannot enforce. It cannot police. In situations of crisis or crime, responsibility remains human — with institutions and individuals. AI can encourage, discourage, inform or refuse. It does not become a moral authority. That limitation is both a safeguard and a design choice.
Understanding this did not diminish the sophistication of the technology. If anything, it increased my appreciation for the engineering behind it — the scale of synthesis, the refinement of language modelling, the decades of research that made it possible. But clarity removes mystification. And mystification is what breeds either fear or blind dependence.
For me, that clarity made all the difference.
